2005年8月13日，湖南省长沙市芙蓉区马坡岭湖南杂交水稻研究中心，温总理一下车就走上前，同袁隆平紧紧握手：“袁老师，您到我的办公室来看过我。今天，我到您的稻田来看您来了！”这是温总理在袁隆平陪同下了解杂交水稻研究情况。

2003年10月3日，胡锦涛专程赴袁隆平院士主持的国家杂交水稻工程技术研究中心，详细察看了超级杂交稻选育项目的进展情况，充分肯定了他们作出的重大贡献。他强调，粮食问题是关系经济安全和国计民生的重大战略问题，任何时候都不能有丝毫的松懈。要严格耕地保护制度，保护和加强农业尤其是粮食生产能力；依靠科学技术，挖掘粮食生产潜力；完善政策措施，充分调动粮食主产区和种粮农民的积极性，确保国家粮食安全。

2001年2月19日日，中共中央、国务院在北京人民大会堂隆重举行国家科学技术奖励大会。这是江泽民与首届国家最高科学技术奖获得者吴文俊(左)、袁隆平合影。
