2004年4月18日，京沪、京广、京哈等干线部分地段线路基础达到时速200公里的要求。直达特快列车在京广、京沪等繁忙干线以160公里/小时速度长距离运行。全路旅客列车平均旅行速度65.7公里/小时，直达特快列车旅行速度129.2公里/小时，特快列车旅行速度92.8公里/小时。

全路时速120公里以上的线路里程达16500公里，其中时速160公里及以上提速线路7700公里，时速200公里的线路里程达1960公里。
